Errors Give Crusaders 3-1 Victory over Nine

Infield Bobbles Prove Difference in Close Contest; Both Teams Get But Four Hits

By Michael Maccoby

Wild hurling and an erratic infield combined to give Holy Cross a 3 to 1 win over the Crimson at Soldiers Field Saturday. In fact, without the bases on balls, hit batters, and muffed grounders, neither team would have scored a run. It was a pitchers' battle for all nine innings, even though both starters were relieved. Neither team could manage more than four hits.

For five innings, Crusader starter Dick Bogdan was invincible, handcuffing the Crimson without a hit. Then, in the sixth, he walked pitcher Johnny Arnold to open the inning. After Ed Krinsky popped to third, Bogdan walked Ralph Robinson and gave up his first hit, a double by Captain Charlie Walsh. Immediately, almost before the ball bad been tossed in from left field. Holy Cross coach Jack Barry strode to the mound, yanked Bogdan, and put in Holy Cross' ace pitcher Jim O'Neil, who held the home team scoreless for three and one-third innings.

Holy Cross got its runs in the sixth and ninth innings. In the sixth, Arnold hit Paul Brissette allowed Art Moossman a single, and walked Crusaders' captain, Jack Concannon, to load the bases. A long fly by Frank Matrango, followed by Dick Hogan's single, sent two runs across the plate. Bob Ward replaced Arnold in the seventh, and gave Holy Cross it final run by walking Moossman with the bases loaded in the ninth.
